My father had this cassette tape, labeled “Not to be heard by DOPS”. DOPS was the government organ that controlled and repressed political and social movements during the military dictatorship in Brazil. The tape was lled with censored songs by great writers that are now in uences and references to us all. Even though we learned about this matter in-depth in history classes, the reality of it all only dawned on me when listening to my parents’ experiences. I wanted to write about this for a long time, but never managed to express it in Portuguese. When Dé played me this piece, the idea of sharing it in English came up, and I could nally tell this story.

This crate of memories
Filled with notes and dreams

The one that taught me all I know
About the days we had no freedom
